Light blue coloured wards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dust wrapper, showing a being tearing a book asunder, with black and gold background and black and gold coloured titles to the front panel and gold coloured titles to the backstrip. Adventure story with overtones of fantasy from the 1950s. On the free front endpaper there is an inscription saying " From My Saddlebag at Gleneagles, 26 Oct. 1961". Shelf wear to the lower edges of the book and there is slight rubbing to the book corners. Softening to the backstrip edges to the head and to the heel of the spine with browning and discolouration to the paper edges. Pages are browned. The dust wrapper is rubbed and faded and the back panel has grubby marks. Rubbing and chipping to the dust wrapper corners and to the head and to the heel of the spine. The lower edges of the dust wrapper has also some chip marks and the lower front corner has a tear measuring 1". There is a tear on the lower back panel, with associated creasing, measuring 1.5 ". Small tears to either side of the top and bottom spine gutter edges. Browning to the verso of the dustwrapper. Handling marks to the pre-front endpaper. Second impression of the First Edition.
