Black-and-white illustrated cartoon on the verso of the front cover, showing "Captain John Morsby raising the British flag on Hayter [Saribi] Island, Samari, 24 April 1873. The text is illustrated with contemporary black-and-white photographs, sketches, illustrations and maps. Illustrated front cover, by Carol Ruff, with yellow background and black and red writing on the front panel and black on the spine. The book corners are rubbed and scuffed, as are the head and heel of spine which has also faded. Grubby marks and rubbing has also occurred to the book covers. To the top right-hand corner of the front cover there is a black "texta" mark. Handing marks and stains to the internal pages.
