[Illustration.] Lays of the Western World, New York: Putnam, undated (late 1840s). Quarto, first edition, pp. [i, 37], tissue guards (some lacking), tooled black morocco boards with gilt lettering and floral patterns to front and back, rebacked, spine decorated with gilt suns, all edges gilt, color illustration, bookplate on front pastedown, gift inscription on title page. A series of poems illustrated by T.W. Gwilt Mapleson, printed by T. Sinclair of Philadelphia. Sabin 44454 dates the book as 1847; other authorities including BAL suggest 1848. Either way this is a very early use of color lithography in America. It is widely held in institutional libraries but scarce in the marketplace. BAL 9407 lists this book for its printing of "Lees in the Cup of Life" by Julia Ward Howe, the author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Condition of this book: Boards rubbed and chipped, dampstains to preliminaries, occasional light soiling, overall good and sound, colors bright. Size: Quarto. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
