Quartos, first edition, pp. viii, 9-488; v, 5-470, dark blue-green cloth boards half-bound in black morocco with gilt lettering and decoration on spines with five raised bands, all edges gilt, engraved plates after paintings by Alonzo Chappel. Former owner's label on front pastedown of V1, removed from V2. Each eminent American profiled gets a few pages of text by Duyckinck and a portrait. Condition of these books: Heavy wear to the leather edges, but good and sound overall. One hinge crack in V1, portraits all fine. Size: Quarto. 2-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
