American Bible Society, 1858, Hardcover (Full Leather), Book Condition: Very Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket, Revised Edition
Holy Bible, New York: American Bible Society, 1858. Massive folio (34x27cm), revised edition, pp. 1043, full brown morocco with five raised bands on spine, gilt lettering and decoration on spine and both covers with French fillets, all edges gilt; one of the great 19th-century American Bibles that seem built to last past the Apocalypse. This one was the property of George and Augusta Beach of Bridgeport, Conn., with their ID on the free front endpaper. The family records section includes some good genealogy including a pitiable roll of infant deaths: "Infant son died August 18th 1857. aged 5 days. ... Infant daughter died January 23rd 1869. aged 8 days." One of the Family Record leaves has been removed. This version came just after a bibliographical controversy set off by the American Bible Society in 1847. Darlow & Moule give a good account of it on pp. 362-363. It began with the society's attempt to reconcile all the different King James variations into one authoritative edition, which turned out to be unpopular. After that, this version emerged from the ABS. D&M: "Some fruit, however, of the collator's careful work remains in the later editions published by the A.B.S., which are generally commended for their accuracy." Condition of this book: Good and sound. Covers scuffed and rubbed, sturdy; small losses at spine ends. Title page has a small burn mark, a few leaves in the back have dampstains in the margins, nothing offensive. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
