SILANO, PACIFICO. Tear Sheets, New York: Dashwood Books/Silent Face Projects, 2016. Octavo, limited edition of 300, pp. 128, wraps, with dust jacket that unfolds to show on its reverse side a gay pinup. Color photos, essay by Marvin Heiferman. Signed and dated by Silano on a preliminary page. Harks to the joyfully lurid 1970s, pre-Internet, pre-AIDS, when print ruled and men were coming out with a pure and innocent lust in their hearts. Nostalgia is not the focus here; the book is about longing, and cultural history. Silano, who is too young to have been a part of the era he re-creates here, said at a recent signing for the book that he was raised by parents who ran a porn store, and he became intrigued by the graphics used to sell the product. He re-photographed parts of old magazines to produce an imaginative photobook that reveals "a complex cultural moment," Heiferman says. Condition of this book: Fine, flawless.
