WITKIN, JOEL-PETER. The Bone House, Santa Fe: Twin Palms, 1998. Square quarto, first edition, pp. 193, olive cloth boards in a brown slipcase with a print mounted on front. Sepia-toned photos with Witkin's trademark themes of corruption and death. He has said he shows the suffering of the body as its mark of the divine, although I have never encountered any suffering remotely like that shown here. He tends to focus on amputation and inappropriately placed sexual organs, giving us cruel, shocking images that made him one of photography's boundary-breakers.
