Folio, No. 246 of an unstated quantity, pp. 48, tritone plates containing 177 images, illustrated boards, text in German by Ernst Kiesling. These are about half the illustrations Menzel created for Franz Kugler's History of Frederick the Great. At the time, around 1840, Menzel was unknown, although he would become the greatest German artist of his generation. The technique he used here, engraving on wood, was new to Germany although established in other countries. Condition of this book: Covers moderately soiled, joints starting to split, interior very good, images fine. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). One volume of the 2-volume set.
