Columbia Univ. Press, 1945, Hardcover (Original Cloth), Book Condition: Very Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: Good, Later Edition
EDER, JOSEPH MARIA. History of Photography, New York: Columbia University Press, 1945. Octavo, fourth edition, first English language translation, pp. xx, 860, blue buckram boards with gilt lettering on spine, gilt image of an antique camera on upper panel, top edge speckled, frontis portrait of the author, former owner's name on front pastedown, free front endpaper is stamped "REVIEW COPY." Translated from the German by Edward Epstean, the antiquarian photography expert and collector. Eder's scope is so wide that he begins his history in ancient Greece. This edition is considered the best because it was his last, released in German in 1932. The first came out in 1884. See Roosens/Salu 4849, which adds a bitchy note: "This translation did not include the illustrations present in the German edition!" Nevertheless, it is important to any photo reference library. Condition of this book: Dust jacket torn, chipped and blemished. Edges lightly soiled, a couple pencil marks in text, overall very good. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Category: Photography; 1940s; Reference. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 52189.
