Small quarto, first edition, pp. 56, burgundy cloth boards with illustrations pasted to both panels, illustrated by Richard Doyle, one of the leading artists of the great era of English illustrated books. Doyle, who began his career at Punch, was known to be erratic but seemed unable to do bad work. Condition of this book: Boards chipped at edges, small piece of paper covering the upper panel is gone. Leaves have finger prints, nothing offensive, and somebody has tried his or her hands at coloring a few of Doyle's duotone images -- the unknown artist didn't do a bad job, but still ... see first image below. Size: Quarto. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
