SCHLIEMANN, HENRY. Ilios, The City and Country of the Trojans, New York: Harper & Brothers, 1881. Quarto, early edition (first was 1880), pp. xvi, 800, 8 folding maps and plans, 32 (sepia drawings of whorls dug up at Troy), red cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine, extensive engraved illustration. According to J.E. Sandys, Schliemann, at the age of 8, having heard his father tell the story of the Trojan War, resolved to excavate Troy (at the time, the existence of Troy was believed to be a myth). He acquired the money for the project by age 36, and the work created so much excitement that it gave a huge boost to archaeology in general (see Sandys' A History of Classical Scholarship, V.3, p.224. Condition of this book: Boards worn, rubbed at extremities, a few small stains. Title page and conjugal leaf are loose but present, all else tight, images fine, a few pencil marks in margins. One of the folding maps has a short tear. Size: Quarto. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact.
