War of the Rebellion, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Price's Missouri Expedition, Etc., Harrisburg: National Historical Society, 1985. Large octavos reprinting the Government Printing Office's original edition of 1893, Series I, Vol. 41, in four books, pp. xv, 1138; 1238; 1128; 1310, black cloth boards with gilt lettering on spines. As the title indicates, these four books are the official records of Sterling Price's ill-fated campaign to take Missouri for the Confederacy. The first book contains reports on skirmishes and battles, largely written by officers. The other three are loaded with correspondence among officers and other authorities. If you are looking for dramatic narrative, I suggest you try the work of Shelby Foote, Bruce Catton, James MacPherson or any of the other great writers who have tackled this subject. On the other hand, if you are looking to outdo those guys, or had an ancestor involved in this campaign, you'll want this set. Condition: Some boards and edges lightly scuffed, all else fine. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 4-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Over 3 kilos. Category: Military & Warfare; United States; 19th century; History.
